Looks like a chic suitcase is poised to be the next big fashion accessory, indeed. Whether traveling for press trips, runway shows or just fancy vacations, fashion editors, models and bloggers definitely had the exotic, FOMO-inducing travel thing on lock down in 2016. Here, a look back at some of the trips we couldn’t stop obsessing over in our Instagram feeds.
Frye Caye, Bahamas For Frye Festival
This month, a gaggle of Solid & Striped-clad supermodels — Elsa Hosk, Lais Ribeiro, Bella Hadid, Alessandra Ambrosio, Emily Ratajkowski, Hailey Baldwin, Hannah Ferguson, Paulina Vega, Gizele Oliveira and Rose Bertram to be exact — traveled (via private jet, of course) to the Bahamas. In addition to posting an internet-breaking amount of drool-inducing Instagrams, the genetically blessed squad was reportedly visiting the islands to check out the newly launched Fyre Festival.
Harbour Island, Bahamas For #Swimkai
Jonathan Simkhai also set his sights on the Bahamas this month. In honor of the launch of his swimwear line, the designer hosted a range of influential pals including Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Harper Bazaar’s Kerry Pierri and Joyann King, blogger Charlotte Groeneveld, photographer Lyndah Wells, W’s Caroline Grosso, V’s Tom Van Dorpe, stylist Nausheen Shah and influencer Caroline Vreeland, who serenaded the crew over dinner at the Coral Sands Harbour Island Hotel on the final night.
Rio de Janiero, Brazil For Louis Vuitton Cruise 2017
Like locusts in high heels, industry folks and fashionable celebs descended on Rio over Memorial Day weekend for the 2017 Louis Vuitton Cruise show, which was held at the city’s breathtaking MAC de Niterói museum. Among those in attendance at the show, accompanying dinners and on the chartered helicopter tours of the city: Zendaya, Miroslava Duma, Chiara Ferragni, Alessandra Ambrosio, Jaden Smith and practically every major editor from every major publication in the world. (If that sounds hyperbolic, consider this: The event was so well-attended by so many influencers that on the day of the show, the hashtag #LVCruise was viewed by nearly 200 million.)
Oxfordshire, England For Dior Cruise 2017
As if 300-year-old Blenheim Palace, the setting of the 2017 Dior Cruise show, wasn’t grand enough, fashion’s jet-setters (Derek Blasberg, Emma Roberts, Chiara Ferragni, Anna Wintour and Aimee Song, just to name a few) were also treated to multiple days of champagne-fueled events punctuated by a very ornate, private train ride to and from the show aboard The Dior Express.
Capri, Italy For Giovanna Battaglia’s Wedding
Natalie Massenet, Jenna Lyons, Tanya Taylor, Margherita Missoni, Peter Dundas, Lauren Santo Domingo, Hamish Bowles… with the amount of bold-faced fashion names on the guest list for Giovanna Battaglia’s over-the-top, cliffside wedding to Oscar Englebert, it might as well be called the first, unofficial Capri Fashion Week.
London, England For Gucci Cruise 2017
The same week that Dior presented its Cruise collection in nearby Oxfordshire, Gucci took over London’s historic Westminster Abbey for its own star-studded, 2017 Cruise show. The result? Instagram feeds everywhere became chock-full of images of models, editors, bloggers and celebs posing in front of Big Ben or hugging the embroidered Gucci pillows that everyone was gifted.
Havana, Cuba for Chanel Cruise 2017
Leave it to Karl Lagerfeld to host one of the epic fashion events of the year: The Chanel Cruise show in Havana, Cuba. To mark the occasion, the label flew in a crowd of over 700 and drove them to the show in candy-colored vintage cars.
The Hamptons, New York for Revolve Clothing
For the entire month of July, the retailer Revolve rented a 6,363 square-foot mansion in the Hamptons town of Water Mill and filled it with a rotating mix of bloggers, celebs, fashion editors and other VIPs (Very Instagram-famous People). In addition to providing a wealth of shareable moments (sailing trips, inflatable pool swans, private concerts, beach parties, fresh tattoos) the retailer also outfitted guests in clothing from its site.
Naples, Italy for Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda Show
Fashion people got a head start on their yearly summer pilgrimage to the sun-drenched coasts of Southern Italy when Dolce & Gabbana staged their annual Alta Moda show in Naples in July. The action-packed show took place in the streets of San Gregorio and featured a brass band, fire works, a cabaret-like performance and an absurd number of male models dressed in loin cloths.
Mykonos, Greece for Zimmermann x Net-a-Porter
In honor of Zimmermann’s 10-year anniversary with Net-a-Porter, a bevy of editors and bloggers gathered in Mykonos for a whirlwind July weekend that, according to Laurel Pantin of The Coveteur, included „cruising on a yacht, dancing barefoot and eating fresh sea urchin literally straight out of the ocean“ all while dressed in exclusive pieces from the Net-a-Porter x Zimmermann capsule.
Black Rock Desert, Nevada for Burning Man
Despite the fact that you have to bring absolutely everything with you to camp in a swirling basin of debris and dust, the annual rich-people’s drug festival we call Burning Man is definitely extravagant — especially this year, when almost every F-Row cool kid worth their glitter braids and rainbow wings made an appearance on the playa.
