Summer is just around the corner, meteorologically speaking, making now the perfect time to invest in a bottle of fragrance that better represents the spirit of the season.

There’s a touch of lavender to re-enforce the theme of warm days spent outside, but once it’s been on the skin a while, this multi-faceted scent turns into something altogether richer, warmer and more leathery. And at just over £20 for 100ml, it’s fantastic value for money, too.

Not so much a new fragrance as a reworked one, the perennially popular Sport scent from Dior Homme now features an even fresher opening owing to an olfactory fruit bowl of blood orange, grapefruit and juicy pear.
As with past incarnations, it’s easy to wear, superbly versatile (just as good for evenings as it is après gym) and, thanks to the signature bottle design, will look stylish on any dressing table.

A true contemporary classic, Boss Bottled takes two time-honoured styles of men’s fragrance – oriental and fougère – and fuses them together to form a scent that’s sold over 70 million bottles to date.
The apple, geranium, clove and cinnamon core of the original is still present in the brand’s 2017 Tonic, but with the addition of ginger and bitter orange, it’s much sharper and altogether more effervescent.

Created by Michel Almairac – the nose behind Joop! Homme and Gucci Pour Homme – this retooled version of 2014’s Jimmy Choo Man adds sparkling citrus notes of bergamot and mandarin.
Almairac has also pulled the olfactory equivalent of adding a slice of lemon to a G&T by introducing a hint of apple to give the fragrance a brighter, juicier feel, alongside earthy patchouli and sensual musk that mean it works just as well for evenings.

Givenchy’s latest release is the fourth fragrance to bear the Gentleman Only name (following the original, Intense and Casual Chic versions).
The new limited-edition summer variant is, as you might expect, much crisper with notes of lemon and Nepal mint, rounded out with earthy vetiver and smoky ambroxan. Like most flankers, it’s different to but not totally removed from the original, so if you loved Gentlemen Only chances are you’ll love this reinterpretation too.

In the fragrance world, the word ‘acqua’ is pretty much shorthand for anything that’s cool, crisp and bracingly fresh (think Acqua di Gio or Acqua di Parma). Zegna’s Acqua Di Iris is no exception to the rule.
Priced somewhere between the fashion house’s mass-market fragrances and its premium Essenze collection, it’s a scent based around sharp, citrusy bergamot, powdery iris and soft, sensual musk. Light and borderline unisex, it’s a fragrance that swings both ways – making it perfect for sharing.

Summer wouldn’t be summer without at least one new addition to Tom Ford’s Private Blend Portofino Neroli collection.
This, the seventh addition to the range, is less obviously citrusy and more floral than the original Portofino Neroli (there’s a big hit of ylang-ylang and jasmine in there), pushing it into traditionally female territory. It’s not better than the now-iconic Portofino Neroli (an almost impossible task), but a welcome update nonetheless.

Whether encased in armour, neoprene or emblazoned in tatts, Jean Paul Gaultier’s iconic Le Male fragrance has a long and playful history of bottle redesign for its limited editions.
This summer’s Superman edition is perfect for comic book geeks and fragrance collectors alike. The scent – which sees the original mint note dialled up and joined by one reminiscent of freshly washed linen – isn’t too shoddy either.

Though not a summer fragrance per se, Miller Harris’ new Le Cèdre – part of its Perfumer’s Library collection – is the perfect alternative for those who like their scents on the spicy side.
Delightfully light for a fragrance so big on wood, it opens with a whiff of piquant pepper before the classic cedar note (think pencil shavings) emerges. The result is a delicate, barely-there scent with a slight floral edge, making it ideal for those who prefer not to smell like a lemon grove.

Forever associated with scantily clad ads starring David Gandy, Light Blue has become one of Dolce & Gabbana’s most successful fragrances. As bracing as face-full of sea spray, it’s everything a summer scent should be: fresh, crisp and just as good on a balmy night as a scorchingly hot day.
As the name suggests, this intense version, offered up in a stronger eau de parfum form, allows the fragrance to have more depth and stamina the skin. All you need to add is the white trunks. And the Gandy-like body, obviously.
