What would a man be without a suit in his wardrobe? Our guess is a lot less stylish and accustomed to getting turned away from every formal wedding, nice restaurant and job interview he ever attended.
This is because even despite relaxing dress codes and that whole ‘athleisure’ thing, solid tailoring – even just one covers-all-bases, go-anywhere suit (usually single-breasted in navy wool with a notch lapel) – remains an essential part of the modern wardrobe.
Fortunately, finding a two- or even three-piece of this kind that fits both the size of your inside leg as well as your wallet has been made immeasurably easier by the UK high street.
At the premium end, Reiss has been offering some of the best off-the-peg examples of well-made, affordable suits for more than four decades. Better yet, the retailer’s personal tailoring service, which includes options of single- or double-breasted cuts, shape of lapels and pockets, vents and lining, as well as more than 120 fabrics, is second to none.
In celebration of this, and no doubt of the suit itself, the British firm is hosting a series of Gentlemen’s Tailoring Evenings across four of its UK stores during April.
Taking place in two of Reiss’ London stores – Vigo Street and One New Change – as well as its Birmingham and Leeds stores on 27 April, the Gentlemen’s Tailoring Evening aims to introduce sartorial novices and pros alike to the brand’s latest ready-to-wear suit collection and the retailer’s personal tailoring service.
On the night, between 5-8pm, in-house specialists will be on hand to offer advice on everything pertaining to tailoring. And because a man in a good suit is rarely seen without a well-groomed face, a quality drink or a £50,000 car (OK, maybe we’ve seen too much James Bond), Reiss will also be offering a range of treatments, whisky tasting and a chance to win an exclusive Jaguar F-Type track experience.
One-on-one tailoring appointments are available to book online in the run up to the event, with each made-to-measure order on the night receiving a complimentary monogrammed shirt. Because a suit without a shirt is no different than a man with no suit at all. Handsome, but ultimately naked.
