Harry Styles, a man whom we’re writing about with frighteningly accelerating frequency on this website, spent his Tuesday morning performing on NBC’s “Today.” Loyal fans, Fashionista staffers withstanding, camped outside Rockefeller Plaza for days so to secure prime viewing positions; Styles extended his gratitude by sending them pizzas, rather than kiwis, this time, and made the wait worth their while by eventually showing up to sing in a punchy pink suit.
The pink is not only an all-around fantastic color — Styles’ yacht-friend Kendall Jenner might call it “appetite-suppressing pink,” while the rest of us call it “millennial pink” or “Tumblr pink” — but it’s also a salute to his debut solo album, “Harry Styles,” which is due out on Friday. As we learned in his recent Rolling Stone cover story, “Pink” was the album’s original working title, and though the name has since changed, pink is still represented in the dream-like album art.
And contrary to any well-warranted assumptions, Gucci didn’t make the suit. Our friends over at Harry Wore What identified it as a bespoke piece by Edward Sexton, a famed British tailor who has long created pieces for the likes of Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger. He made Bianca Jagger’s iconic white wedding suit, and Stella McCartney trained under him. Back in March, The Guardian reported that Sexton was working with Styles ahead of his album’s launch. When Fashionista reached out to a representative for Sexton shortly thereafter, we were told the story simply referred to the jacket they made for Styles’ Another Man editorial. (Sure, Jan!)
Clearly their partnership extended beyond that one-off, and rightly so. If there’s anyone who can dress Styles for the part of Bona Fide Rockstar for the Ages on Par With Mick Jagger, it’s Sexton. Our dude is clearly in with the right people.
